What we check

Common dating red flags

From romance scams to emotional manipulation, these are the patterns we look for.

Love-bombing

"I've never felt this way before" after three days. Overwhelming affection fast-tracks trust they haven't earned.

Won't do video calls

"My camera's broken." They're not who their photos say they are. Or they're multiple people running scripts.

Sob story + money ask

"Stuck overseas, wallet stolen, can you send $200?" This is the romance scam playbook, unchanged for decades.

Moving too fast

Talking marriage, moving in, shared bank accounts within weeks. Real intimacy takes real time.

Isolation tactics

"Don't tell your friends about us yet." Cutting you off from your support network is a control move, not romance.

Pushing off-platform fast

Moving to WhatsApp or Telegram within minutes means no trail, no moderation, no accountability.

Too-good-to-be-true profile

Model-level photos, perfect job, tragic backstory. Scammers build the profile you'd swipe right on.

Inconsistent details

Stories that change over time: age, job, location, family. Keeping lies straight is hard across long conversations.

Questions

Dating scam FAQ

What's the most common romance scam?

A fast-moving emotional connection followed by an urgent financial request. The scammer invests weeks building trust, then invents a crisis (medical, travel, business) that requires you to send money immediately. Variations use crypto, gift cards or Western Union.

Is love-bombing always a scam?

Not always. Sometimes people are just intense. But combined with refusing video calls, pushing off-platform fast, or asking for money, it's a strong warning sign.

They asked for money but said they'd pay me back. Is that different?

No. In romance scams, the promise to pay back is part of the script. Never send money to someone you haven't met in person, no matter how convincing the story.

Can I upload a screenshot from my dating app?

Yes. Screenshots from Tinder, Hinge, Bumble, WhatsApp, Instagram DMs or anywhere else. We read the text and analyse it.

Check a message before you catch feelings.
